Swimming-pool season is upon us, which unfortunately means using plenty of chlorine to get backyard pools ready for the sunny weather.
The regeneration zone takes up about half of the pool area, but filters the water without any added chemicals. It consists of gravel, a kaldness filter, and plants. Water filters through these materials and is then pumped back into the swimming area.
Those plants were selected based on their compatibly with Valencia’s climate, and there are edible species like Cress and Celery.
The pool measures just under 1,400 square feet, including the swimming area and regeneration zone. It’s made from a material that repels algae growth and is apparently easy to clean.
There’s also an adjacent lawn irrigated solely by pool water. Mowing it prevents eutrophication, or over-enrichment from organic matter that could lead to algae blooms.
Finally, the pool features a species of native shrimp that consumer mosquito larvae and other solid matter.
