A stereotypical coming-of-age milestone for children is learning to ride a bicycle, and now there’s a more-sustainable way to get them rolling.
GreenChamp (via inhabitat) offers a bamboo balance bicycle for kids aged 18 months to five years. The pedal-free bike is designed to give young riders confidence before transitioning to a full-size bike with training wheels.
The bike has a double-walled bamboo frame infused with honey (to prevent cracking) that should help indoctrinate toddlers into the cult of sustainability, or just make for a charming piece of folk art for childless people to hang on their walls.
The bamboo construction has practical benefits as well. It’s lightweight and–with the ability to grow up to one meter per day–one of the most-renewable materials around.
GreenChamp is launching the bamboo bike through a Kickstarter campaign, which starts May 30.
