Retrofitting an existing structure with solar panels can be difficult, but the Solar Decathlon team from the University of Applied Sciences Frankfurt am Main has a solution.
The team’s OnTop home (via Inhabitat) is a modular unit designed with efficiency in mind, including a rooftop solar array. It was also designed to be easily placed in dense urban areas, where 70 percent of Germany’s population lives.
Both exterior and interior are cleanly designed, showing the team’s emphasis on easing the adoption of sustainable elements into urban housing. That aesthetic is also intended to appeal to a younger population, exactly the demographic that’s moving into cities in large numbers.
OnTop took first place in the Social Housing category, and perhaps some elements of its design will be applied beyond the Solar Decathlon.
