In the developed world, it’s easy to take accessible, clean water for granted. Maybe too easy.
This infographic from Pelican Water highlights the ways in which public water systems can become contaminated. The United States has one of the most sophisticated public works in the world–and (in theory) the resources to maintain it–but nothing is perfect.
The water supply can become contaminated in several, usually unintentional ways such as through malfunctioning sewage-control equipment and fertilizer or pesticide runoff from farms.
According to the graphic, the EPA also recently found several unregulated chemicals in more than one third of tested water systems, including strontium, lithium, and caffeine.
If this has you scrambling to your doomsday bunker, home filtration systems are a viable option. Avoid bottled water though, it’s expensive, and not very sustainable.
